What is a CPAP Machine?

A CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine is a device used to treat sleep apnea by providing a constant flow of air pressure through a mask to help keep the airways open and allow for easier breathing during sleep.

What is the difference between CPAP, APAP & BiPAP?


CPAP: Delivers constant air pressure to keep airways open during sleep.

APAP: It stands for Automatic Positive Airway Pressure, It is similar to CPAP but the pressure delivered changes automatically based on the needs of the patient. APAP machines can detect changes in breathing and adjust the pressure in real-time to provide the minimum pressure required for a given moment.

BiPAP: Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure, is also similar to CPAP but delivers two pressure settings: a higher pressure for inhaling and a lower pressure for exhaling. Used for more complicated sleep apnea.

Note: Appropriate device is determined by healthcare provider based on sleep study and other factors.

What are the side effects of using a CPAP machine?

The most common side effects of CPAP therapy include:

Dry mouth or nose, skin irritation, claustrophobia, nasal congestion or irritation, bloating and abdominal discomfort, and headaches.

These can often be managed with adjustments to the machine or additional equipment. Consult your doctor if experiencing any side effects.
