Frequently Asked Questions

What is a home sleep study?

A home sleep study is a more convenient option than visiting a sleep lab. It is much less intrusive than an in-clinic sleep study because you only need to wear a portable monitoring device for one night of sleeping and have at least four consecutive hours of sleep. You'll get precise results without ever leaving your house!

Are at-home sleep apnea test accurate?

Yes, because you are conducting this sleep study in the privacy of your own home, the results will be comparable, if not superior, to those obtained in a sleep lab. Patients sleep better and are more comfortable. You will receive reports on your pulse rate, AHI, SpO2, total sleep time, and respiratory events with Night Owl's at-home sleep study.

How does a home sleep study work?

The NightOwl App will walk patients through how the sleep apnea test works and will provide step-by-step instructions. Attaching the sensor is simple; simply place the device on your pointer finger and secure it with fabric medical tape.

How should I prepare for a home sleep study test?

Please refrain from consuming caffeine, alcohol, or napping on the day of your test. Caffine and alcohol can interfere with your data, and napping will make it more difficult to fall asleep when needed.

What happens after completing my home sleep study?

When you open the NightOwl Companion App the next morning, you will select end test. When the test is finished, the results are sent to the doctor for review. Within 1-2 business days, you will receive an email with an interpretation of your home sleep test results. This interpretation can be used to do a couple of things: either give you a prescription or tell you if you need to see a sleep specialist. Your results may also be normal, in which case no sleep apnea diagnosis can be made. Occasionally, people require 1-2 extra nights of data collection with the Night Owl. If this occurs, you will receive a push notification within 1 hour of the end of your test informing you that you will need to sleep with the NightOwl device again.

Does a home sleep study require a prescription?

Yes, a prescription stating that you qualify for a home sleep study is required. There's no need to be concerned if you don't have a prescription! The prescription is included in the cost of the sleep study. If the doctor deems it necessary during your virtual appointment, he or she will prescribe a home sleep test for you. If it is determined that you do not require a home sleep study, you will only be charged the consultation fee of $100.
