Understanding The Home Sleep Test

What is the Wesper Home Sleep Test, and what does it measure?

Wesper is an FDA-cleared Level 3 home sleep apnea test that you take in your own bed. Two lightweight wireless patches worn on your chest and abdomen measure breathing effort and airflow directly, while a finger pulse oximeter tracks your blood oxygen (SpO2) and heart rate. The system also records body position, snoring, total sleep time, and estimated sleep stages. After testing, your data is reviewed by a board-certified sleep doctor as part of a real clinical sleep evaluation, not a generic consumer sleep score.

What does “Level 3” mean for a home sleep test?

Level 3 refers to a category of home sleep apnea tests that measure key cardiorespiratory signals used to assess sleep-disordered breathing. Unlike in-lab polysomnography, it does not include EEG brainwave monitoring and is intended for clinically directed sleep apnea screening at home.

Is Wesper FDA-cleared?

Yes. Wesper is an FDA-cleared Level 3 home sleep apnea test (HSAT). The signals it records, including thoracic and abdominal respiratory effort, airflow, SpO2, heart rate, body position, and sleep staging, are FDA-cleared, and its accuracy was validated against in-lab polysomnography in a peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. Your recorded data is reviewed by a board-certified sleep physician as part of a medical evaluation.

What comes with the Wesper kit?

The Wesper kit includes two rechargeable wearable patches (one for the chest, one for the abdomen), single-use adhesive strips (a fresh strip is used for each patch every night), a finger pulse oximeter, a charging cable, and a prepaid return label. There is no nasal cannula and no wires. The Wesper app, available free for iOS and Android, guides setup, records each night, and uploads your data for physician review.

How do I run the test each night?

Everything runs through the Wesper app. Charge both patches until you see the blue light, then at bedtime apply a fresh adhesive strip to each patch, place one on your upper chest and one just below your sternum, put on the finger pulse oximeter, and tap Start Test. Keep Bluetooth on and your phone within 4 feet of you all night, with the app open. When you wake up, tap End Test so the night uploads for review. If a night does not upload, the most common fixes are ending the test in the app, keeping the phone near the sensors, and confirming both patches were charged and connected.

How many nights do I wear the Wesper test?

You test for two nights in your own bed. Multi-night testing is one of Wesper's core advantages: sleep varies night to night due to stress, congestion, alcohol, or a bad night, so recording more than one night reduces single-night bias and gives the reviewing sleep doctor a more realistic picture of your typical breathing. After each night you get an early recap in the app, and after your final night a board-certified sleep doctor reviews the full data set.

Who is the Wesper test for?

Wesper is for adults 18 and older who want to be evaluated for sleep apnea at home. Its FDA-cleared intended use is adult sleep studies; it is not cleared as a pediatric sleep study device. If you have a pacemaker or another implanted device, check with your doctor before using any home sleep test. Because results are reviewed by a board-certified sleep physician, you do not need to already have a sleep specialist to take it.

What will I see on the report?

Your report is built around the metrics sleep doctors actually use to evaluate sleep apnea: AHI (apnea-hypopnea index, at both 3% and 4% criteria), ODI and RDI, central apnea index, T90, and hypoxic burden, which reflects the total low-oxygen load across the night. It also shows heart rate, body position, snoring, total sleep time, and estimated sleep staging. You get an early recap after each night in the app, and the final physician-reviewed report after your last night.

How accurate is Wesper compared to an in-lab sleep study?

In a peer-reviewed validation study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, Wesper showed a 0.951 correlation with in-lab polysomnography (PSG) for identifying sleep apnea events, with Bland-Altman analysis confirming reliable agreement. Wesper cites this as 95% PSG correlation. Because it measures chest and abdominal breathing effort and airflow directly rather than estimating them, and tests across multiple nights, results reflect your typical sleep. As a Level 3 test it does not record brain waves, so an in-lab study may still be recommended for complex cases.

What is the difference between Wesper and WatchPAT?

Both are FDA-cleared home sleep apnea tests, but they measure differently. Wesper uses two patches on the chest and abdomen to measure respiratory effort and airflow directly, plus a finger pulse oximeter for oxygen and heart rate, and you test for two nights with the same reusable kit. WatchPAT is a wrist-worn test that derives breathing events from peripheral arterial signals at the finger and is typically a single-night study. People who move at night or want multi-night data often prefer the patch approach; the best choice is the workflow you will wear correctly all night.

What if my results are negative or unclear but symptoms still feel obvious?

Home sleep apnea tests can be very useful, but they do not cover every clinical scenario addressed by in-lab polysomnography. If results are negative or borderline while symptoms persist, discussing escalation to an in-lab study with a provider is typically the next step.

Do I need a prescription or a doctor's referral to take the Wesper test?

No referral is needed to order the test. You buy the kit, test at home, and a board-certified sleep doctor reviews your results as part of the service. If the review shows sleep apnea, the doctor can issue a prescription, which you need to buy a CPAP or APAP machine. This makes Wesper a common first step for people who suspect sleep apnea but do not yet have a sleep specialist or a formal diagnosis.

What does the price of the Wesper Home Sleep Test cover?

The price is a one-time purchase that covers the complete testing service: the sensor kit (two patches, adhesives, and finger pulse oximeter), two nights of at-home testing, nightly recap reports in the app, review of your full data by a board-certified sleep doctor, your finalized clinical report, and a prescription if sleep apnea is diagnosed. There is no lab visit and no subscription. The reusable device must be sent back after testing using the prepaid return label included in your kit.

How and when do I get my Wesper results?

You get insights at two speeds. After each night of testing, the Wesper app gives you an early report recapping that night's sleep and breathing. After your final night, the complete data set is securely uploaded and reviewed by a board-certified sleep physician, who sends your finalized report. The report arrives with clear next steps, including a prescription if sleep apnea is diagnosed.

How many hours do I need to sleep each night?

Aim for a full night of sleep on each of your two test nights. Wesper does not publish a fixed minimum, but home sleep tests generally need at least about 4 hours of good recording per night to be scorable, so the more you sleep the more reliable your report, ideally 6 to 8 hours or more. Testing across two nights also reduces single-night bias for a more accurate result.
