Could Sleep Apnea Be Hiding in Plain Sight?

You’re dragging through your mornings, feeling edgy all day, struggling to focus.

You call it “just being tired.” But what if it’s sleep apnea?

Trouble Losing Weight, No Matter What You Do?

Disrupted sleep affects hormones like leptin and ghrelin, making you feel hungrier, crave junk food, and hold on to weight even when you’re doing everything “right.”

Constant Headaches or Morning Migraines?

Poor-quality sleep lowers your pain threshold and messes with healing processes, turning temporary discomfort into a daily struggle.

Feeling Mentally Off?

Sleep restores balance to your brain. When it’s broken, so is your focus, patience, and emotional stability.

Getting Sick More Often Than Usual?

Your immune system recharges at night. Poor sleep means fewer infection-fighting cells and more inflammation.

Dealing with Aches, Pains, or Slow Recovery?

Your muscles and tissues heal while you sleep. Without that repair time, recovery slows, and chronic pain drags on.

Your “Bad Sleep” Could Be Sleep Apnea.

The first step is understanding what’s really going on.

Understanding The Home Sleep Test

What is WatchPAT?

WatchPAT is a clinical-grade, FDA-cleared home sleep testing system that uses Peripheral Arterial Tonometry (PAT) to evaluate sleep-disordered breathing. The device is worn on the wrist with a finger probe that measures vascular tone and oxygen levels, along with a chest sensor that records snoring and body position. Through these signals, it calculates indices such as the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), Respiratory Disturbance Index (RDI), oxygen desaturation, heart rate, and sleep architecture across light, deep, and REM sleep.

How is WatchPAT One different from other home sleep tests?

WatchPAT One measures your True Sleep Time, so it calculates your AHI and RDI based on the time you are actually asleep rather than the total time the device was recording. Many home sleep tests use total recording time, which can underestimate the severity of sleep apnea. WatchPAT One also reports sleep stages including REM, the Respiratory Disturbance Index (RDI) with respiratory effort-related arousals (RERAs), and data that helps distinguish central from obstructive events.

How does WatchPAT compare to in-lab polysomnography?

WatchPAT has been validated against polysomnography (PSG), the gold standard for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea, with an 89 percent correlation to PSG reported by the manufacturer and a 98 percent study success rate. The PAT signal is an approved measure in the 2017 AASM clinical practice guidelines for home sleep apnea testing in adults with OSA. It does not replace full PSG for complex neurological or non-respiratory sleep disorders, but for OSA assessment it provides clinically validated results suitable for treatment planning.

How do I use the device at home?

The WatchPAT setup requires three contact points: the wrist unit, the finger probe, and the chest sensor. The wrist device records motion data and receives the signals from the finger probe, which captures arterial tone and oxygen levels, while the chest sensor identifies snoring vibrations and body position. The WatchPAT One app guides you step by step, confirming sensor placement and recording readiness before sleep.

Can I move during the test?

Yes. The WatchPAT system is built to capture natural body movement during sleep. Temporary interruptions, such as getting out of bed, do not disrupt the recording. The study remains valid as long as the sensors remain attached until the test completes.

Is WatchPAT a single-use test?

Yes. The WatchPAT One is a fully disposable home sleep study device intended for a one-night session. The manual states the device is a single-use product and cannot be used again. After use, there is no return shipment, no cleaning, and no charging, making the process streamlined for both patient and provider.

What is the minimum age for the WatchPAT One?

The WatchPAT One is FDA-cleared for individuals 12 years and older for its main sleep apnea measures, and 17 and older for the central apnea index (pAHIc). It is used under the direction of a physician.

Do I need a prescription for WatchPAT One?

You do not need to bring your own prescription. WatchPAT One is an FDA-cleared, prescription-use home sleep test, and your purchase at Sleeplay includes review of your results by a board-certified physician. After your test, the physician interprets the data and provides a medical report, and if obstructive sleep apnea is diagnosed you receive a prescription (Rx) you can use to obtain CPAP therapy.

Is WatchPAT eligible for HSA or FSA funds?

Yes. Because the WatchPAT One is classified as a medical diagnostic device, it qualifies under most Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) as a reimbursable expense. Patients may use pre-tax funds to reduce the overall cost of testing.

What do my AHI and RDI results mean?

Your WatchPAT One report includes the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) and the Respiratory Disturbance Index (RDI). Sleep physicians generally classify obstructive sleep apnea by AHI as normal (fewer than 5), mild (5 to 15), moderate (15 to 30), or severe (30 or more) events per hour of sleep. RDI can be higher than AHI because it also counts respiratory effort-related arousals (RERAs). Your physician interprets these numbers alongside your symptoms.

Does the WatchPAT One replace an in-lab sleep study?

For evaluating obstructive sleep apnea at home, the WatchPAT One provides clinically validated data that is often enough for a diagnosis. It does not replace in-lab polysomnography for complex cases or other sleep disorders, and it is not a CPAP titration study. Your physician will advise if an in-lab study is needed.

Who makes the WatchPAT One?

The WatchPAT One is made by Itamar Medical, now part of ZOLL Medical Corporation, which is why you may see it branded as ZOLL Itamar. Itamar Medical developed the Peripheral Arterial Tonometry (PAT) technology behind the device and received FDA clearance for the WatchPAT One in 2019 under 510(k) number K183559. The same PAT platform is used in the reusable WatchPAT 300 found in sleep clinics.

Is the WatchPAT One a sleep study?

Yes. The WatchPAT One is an FDA-cleared home sleep apnea test, a type of sleep study you perform in your own bed. It records seven channels of data: the PAT signal, heart rate, oximetry, actigraphy, snoring, body position, and chest movement. From these it reports AHI, RDI, a central apnea index, and sleep stages including REM. It is a diagnostic aid for sleep-related breathing disorders used under the direction of a physician. For complex or non-respiratory sleep disorders, an in-lab polysomnography may still be needed.

What comes with the WatchPAT One?

The WatchPAT One arrives ready for one night of testing. It consists of a wrist-worn unit with an attached finger probe that records the PAT signal, oxygen levels, and heart rate, plus a chest sensor that records snoring, body position, and chest movement. The device is powered by a single disposable AAA battery and pairs with the WatchPAT ONE smartphone app, which guides sensor placement and securely uploads your data when the test ends. Because it is fully disposable, there is nothing to mail back afterward.
