CPAP Batteries

A CPAP battery keeps your therapy running when the wall outlet cannot: during a power outage at home, or off the grid while you travel and camp. We carry two kinds, compact travel batteries sized for a night or two and higher-capacity backup power stations that cover several nights, so you can match the battery to how long you need it. No prescription is needed, and CPAP batteries are FSA/HSA eligible.

Pick by how you will use it

  • Backup power for outages: higher-capacity power stations that run multiple nights at home and deliver clean, pure sine wave power for your machine. Look at the Zopec Explore 8000 and the Western Medical EXP APEX power banks.
  • Travel and camping: lightweight batteries sized for one to two nights, several of them solar-rechargeable. Look at the Medistrom Pilot-24, Pilot-12 Lite, and Pilot Flex, the Zopec Explore Mini, the NiteOwl, and the Breas Extended Life Battery for Z1 and Z2 travel CPAPs. For longer trips, the Zopec Explore 5500 and 5700 and the Freedom 160 (around 160 watt-hours) cover two or more nights and carry on with airline approval.

Match the battery to your machine, since the connection is machine-specific:

  • ResMed AirSense 10: the Medistrom Pilot-24 or a Zopec Explore battery.
  • ResMed AirSense 11: the Medistrom Pilot-24 with the AirSense 11 cable kit, or the NiteOwl.
  • ResMed AirMini: the Medistrom Pilot-24 with the included AirMini cable and adapter.
  • Transcend Micro: the Transcend PowerAway.
  • Philips DreamStation: the Medistrom Pilot-12 Lite or the Freedom 160.
  • Breas Z1 and Z2 travel CPAPs: the Breas Extended Life Battery.

How long will it run?

Run-time depends on your pressure, your machine, and the battery's watt-hours. As a rough guide a CPAP draws about 30 to 60 watts, so a battery around 300 watt-hours covers roughly one night, and larger power stations stretch to several. A heated humidifier or heated tubing drains the battery much faster, so turning it off can meaningfully extend run-time. Most batteries recharge from a wall outlet in a few hours, and several also accept solar charging. See each product page for its capacity and run-time.

Flying with a CPAP battery

Most CPAP batteries are lithium-ion, so airline rules apply. A battery at or under 100 watt-hours is generally allowed in carry-on without approval, and one rated 101 to 160 watt-hours needs airline approval. CPAP batteries meet FAA acceptance criteria for in-flight use, but always check your airline before you fly. For the full checklist, read our guide on flying with a CPAP machine.

FAQs

How long does a CPAP battery last on one charge?

It depends on your pressure, your machine, and the battery's watt-hours. As a rough guide, a CPAP draws about 30 to 60 watts, so many batteries cover roughly one to two nights with the humidifier off. A heated humidifier or heated tubing uses more power and shortens run-time, and each product page lists its capacity.

Which CPAP machines work with these batteries?

Most full-size and travel CPAPs have a matching option. The Medistrom Pilot-24 powers the ResMed AirSense 10 and AirSense 11 (the AirSense 11 needs its specific cable) and the AirMini; the Pilot-12 Lite and Freedom 160 suit the Philips DreamStation; the Transcend PowerAway is made for the Transcend Micro; and the Breas Extended Life Battery fits the Z1 and Z2. Check each product's compatibility before you buy.

Can I use a CPAP battery with a heated humidifier?

Yes, but a heated humidifier and heated tubing draw extra power and noticeably shorten run-time. Turning them off, or using a heat-and-moisture exchanger instead, helps the battery last longer.

How do I connect a CPAP battery to my machine?

You connect through a DC cable or adapter matched to your machine, which is why batteries are sold by compatibility. The right cable usually comes with the battery, so check the product page to confirm what is included for your model.

How long does a CPAP battery take to recharge?

It varies with the battery's capacity, but many recharge from a wall outlet in a few hours. Several models also accept solar charging for longer off-grid trips.

Can I fly with a CPAP battery?

Most CPAP batteries are lithium-ion, so airline rules apply. A battery up to about 100 watt-hours is generally allowed in carry-on, and 101 to 160 watt-hours usually needs airline approval. CPAP batteries meet FAA acceptance criteria for in-flight use, but always check your airline first. See our flying with a CPAP machine guide for the full checklist.

Do I need a prescription to buy a CPAP battery, and is it FSA or HSA eligible?

No, you do not need a prescription to buy a CPAP battery, and they are generally FSA and HSA eligible, so you can use pre-tax funds at checkout.
