Overview

The NightOwl is a multi-night home sleep apnea test (HSAT) for adults 22 and older who suspect they may have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). A small fingertip sensor records your data while you sleep, and a licensed physician reviews the results and provides a medical report, without a single night in a sleep lab.

The Sleeplay process includes everything you need from start to finish. You begin with an online questionnaire and a virtual consultation with a licensed physician, who evaluates whether a home sleep study is appropriate for you and orders the device. After wearing the sensor at home for up to 10 nights, a physician reviews your recorded data. If OSA is diagnosed, you receive a valid prescription (Rx) you can use to purchase a CPAP machine. You do not need to bring your own prescription to start.

The sensor measures peripheral arterial tone (PAT), blood oxygen saturation via photoplethysmography (PPG-based oximetry), pulse rate, and actigraphy (body movement via an accelerometer to distinguish sleep from wakefulness). These signals are combined to calculate your Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), the standard clinical measure of sleep apnea severity. The manufacturer describes strong agreement with in-lab polysomnography (PSG) for AHI measurement.

Unlike a single-night test, the NightOwl records up to 10 nights of data for a single patient, capturing the natural night-to-night variability in breathing that one recording can miss. Each box includes 10 adhesive tape strips, one per night, and the device records up to 10 nights based on an average of about 8 hours of sleep per night.

The myAir app (iOS and Android) handles setup, starts the recording, and transfers your data securely to the ResMed cloud each morning for auto-scoring and physician review. The NightOwl is FSA/HSA eligible.

Guide and Resources
Important Tips
  • Download the myAir app on your phone before your first night. It is available for free on iOS and Android and is required to operate the device.
  • Place the sensor on your fingertip and secure it with one of the included adhesive tape strips. Use a new strip each night.
  • Wear the sensor for a full night of sleep, then remove it in the morning. The device records up to 10 nights total, based on an average of about 8 hours of sleep per night.
  • The myAir app transfers your night's data automatically each morning when your phone connects to the internet. Keep Bluetooth enabled while you sleep.
  • A licensed physician reviews your data and prepares a medical report. The prescribing physician shares your results with you after the test is complete and interpreted, so allow time for this review after your test nights.
  • If obstructive sleep apnea is diagnosed, you will receive a valid prescription (Rx) you can use to shop for CPAP machines through Sleeplay.
  • The NightOwl is designed for single-patient use and records up to 10 nights total. Do not share the device with another person.
  • To compare the NightOwl with other home sleep testing options before deciding, browse our home sleep tests.
  • Contact your physician or the Sleeplay care team before starting the test if you have any questions about whether an HSAT is appropriate for your situation.

What is the NightOwl?

The NightOwl is a home sleep apnea test (HSAT) that lets you test for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in your own bed instead of a sleep lab. It consists of a single small sensor that attaches to your fingertip and records physiological data while you sleep. A licensed physician reviews the data and provides a medical report. It is manufactured by Ectosense, now part of ResMed.

What is a home sleep apnea test (HSAT)?

An HSAT is a simplified sleep study you perform at home to screen for obstructive sleep apnea. Unlike an in-lab polysomnography (PSG), which records dozens of channels simultaneously in a hospital setting, an HSAT focuses on the signals most relevant to diagnosing OSA: breathing patterns, blood oxygen levels, and body movement. HSATs are appropriate for adults who are suspected of having moderate-to-severe OSA without other significant sleep disorders. Your physician determines whether an HSAT is right for you.

Do I need a prescription to get the NightOwl?

You do not need to bring your own prescription. The NightOwl is an FDA-cleared prescription device, but the Sleeplay process includes an online questionnaire and a virtual consultation with a licensed physician who evaluates your situation and, if appropriate, orders the test on your behalf. After you complete the test nights, a physician reviews your data and provides a medical report. If obstructive sleep apnea is diagnosed, you receive a valid prescription (Rx) you can use to purchase a CPAP machine.

Do I need a smartphone to use the NightOwl?

Yes. The NightOwl works with the myAir app, which is required to set up the device, start each night's recording, and transfer your data to the ResMed cloud. You need a smartphone or tablet that can install the myAir app from the App Store or Google Play.

How does the NightOwl sleep study work?

You start with an online questionnaire and a short virtual consultation with a licensed physician, who orders the device if an HSAT is appropriate for you. Each night, you place the sensor on your fingertip, secure it with an adhesive tape strip, and sleep normally. The myAir app transfers your data to the cloud each morning. After you complete your test nights, a physician reviews the recordings and prepares a written medical report.

How many nights do I wear the NightOwl, and why does that matter?

The NightOwl can record up to 10 nights of data for a single patient, based on an average of about 8 hours of sleep per night. Multi-night testing captures the natural variability in breathing from night to night, which a single-night study can miss. For example, a person with positional or REM-related sleep apnea may not show many events on every night.

What is the minimum age for the NightOwl?

The NightOwl is FDA-cleared for individuals who are 22 years old and older. It is intended to aid in the evaluation of sleep-related breathing disorders in adult patients, under the direction of a healthcare professional.

Does the NightOwl sleep test record audio?

No. The NightOwl does not include a microphone and does not record audio of any kind. It only collects physiological signals through the fingertip sensor: peripheral arterial tone (PAT), blood oxygen saturation, pulse rate, and body movement via an accelerometer.

How accurate is the NightOwl compared to an in-lab sleep study?

The manufacturer describes strong agreement between the NightOwl's Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) output and results from in-lab polysomnography (PSG), the gold-standard sleep study. As with any HSAT, results should be interpreted by a physician in the context of your full clinical picture. If your results are inconclusive or your physician suspects a condition beyond OSA, an in-lab study may be recommended.

What does the NightOwl actually measure?

The sensor measures four things: peripheral arterial tone (PAT), blood oxygen saturation via photoplethysmography (PPG-based oximetry), pulse rate, and actigraphy (body movement detected by an accelerometer). These signals are processed together to calculate your Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), which indicates how many apnea and hypopnea events occur per hour of sleep.

What is in the box?

Each NightOwl package includes one NightOwl sensor, 10 adhesive tape strips (one per test night), and printed instructions. Setup and data transfer require the free myAir app on your smartphone (iOS or Android), which is not a physical component but is required to use the device.

How do I get my results, and how long does it take?

Each morning after a test night, the myAir app transfers your data automatically. After your test nights are complete, a physician reviews the auto-scored data and prepares a medical report. Per ResMed, the results are provided to the prescribing physician, who then reaches out to share them with you. Sleeplay will explain the expected timeframe during your consultation.

What happens if I am diagnosed with sleep apnea?

If a physician determines that you have obstructive sleep apnea based on your NightOwl results, you will receive a valid prescription (Rx). You can use that Rx to purchase a CPAP machine at Sleeplay. Your report will include the AHI score and the severity classification, which helps determine the appropriate CPAP pressure settings.

Is the NightOwl FSA or HSA eligible?

Yes. The NightOwl is FSA/HSA eligible. You can use your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) funds when purchasing through Sleeplay.

What is the relationship between NightOwl, Ectosense, and ResMed?

The NightOwl was developed by Ectosense, a company focused on home sleep testing technology. Ectosense is now part of ResMed, a global medical device company known for CPAP and respiratory care products. The NightOwl brand and device continue to operate under the ResMed umbrella.

What do my results (the AHI) mean?

Your report includes the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), the number of apnea and hypopnea events per hour of sleep. Sleep physicians generally classify obstructive sleep apnea by AHI as normal (fewer than 5), mild (5 to 15), moderate (15 to 30), or severe (30 or more) events per hour of sleep. Your physician interprets your AHI alongside your symptoms and medical history.

Does the NightOwl replace an in-lab sleep study?

For many people being evaluated for obstructive sleep apnea, a home test like the NightOwl gives enough information for a diagnosis. It does not replace in-lab polysomnography for complex cases, suspected central sleep apnea, or other sleep disorders, and it is not a CPAP titration study. Your physician will recommend an in-lab study if one is needed.
