Auto Adjusting CPAP Machines

An auto-adjusting CPAP machine, or APAP, automatically raises and lowers your air pressure breath by breath instead of holding one fixed setting. Also called an auto CPAP machine or an APAP machine, it keeps you at the lowest pressure you need at each moment of the night. Below you can shop APAP machines from ResMed, React Health (3B Medical), and Transcend, including travel models and Certified Pre-Owned options. All are FSA/HSA eligible and require a prescription.

How an APAP machine works

An APAP machine uses sensors to read your breathing and auto-titrates the pressure: it eases off when your airway is stable and adds pressure when it detects snoring, airflow limitation, or an apnea. Most auto CPAP machines run within a 4 to 20 cm H2O range, and your clinician sets the minimum and maximum that are right for you. A standard fixed CPAP, by contrast, holds a single pressure all night. Want the full comparison? Read APAP vs CPAP: which one should you choose?

Is an auto CPAP machine right for you?

Auto CPAP is often considered for people whose pressure needs change through the night, such as positional sleepers, people whose needs shift with sleep stage or weight, and those who found a single high fixed pressure hard to exhale against. It is not right for everyone: providers may not recommend APAP for conditions such as central sleep apnea or certain respiratory issues, so your doctor confirms it fits your diagnosis. Not sure where you stand? Read how to know if auto CPAP is right for you.

Comfort features to look for

  • Ramp: starts therapy at a lower pressure and rises gradually to your set pressure as you fall asleep.
  • EPR (expiratory pressure relief): eases the pressure as you breathe out so exhaling feels more natural.
  • Heated humidification: adds moisture to reduce a dry nose or throat. The AirSense 11 and AirSense 10 use built-in HumidAir; the AirMini uses a waterless HumidX.
  • Data tracking: many machines record your usage and your AHI and can connect to an app like myAir, so you and your clinician can review your therapy.

If your pressure ever feels too strong, do not change the settings yourself. Read is your CPAP pressure too high? and talk with your clinician.

FAQs

Do I need a prescription for an APAP machine?

Yes. In the US an APAP machine is an FDA-cleared Class II medical device, so it requires a prescription. You can get one after an overnight sleep study or a home sleep test. See our guide on buying a CPAP machine without a prescription for your options.

What is the difference between APAP and CPAP?

A standard CPAP holds one fixed pressure all night, while an APAP auto-adjusts within a minimum and maximum range that your clinician sets. Both are standard treatments for obstructive sleep apnea, and which one fits you is your doctor's call. For a full comparison, read our APAP vs CPAP guide.

How does an APAP machine work?

An APAP machine uses sensors to read your breathing and auto-titrates the pressure breath by breath, lowering it when your airway is stable and raising it when it detects snoring, airflow limitation, or an apnea.

Is APAP better than CPAP?

Neither is universally better. Many people find APAP more comfortable because it only delivers higher pressure when it is needed, but your clinician decides which therapy fits your diagnosis. The best machine is the one you use every night.

What pressure does an APAP machine use?

Auto CPAP machines commonly operate within a 4 to 20 cm H2O range, and your clinician sets your personal minimum and maximum. Do not change these settings yourself; if your pressure feels too high, read whether your CPAP pressure is too high and talk with your provider.

How much does an APAP machine cost?

It depends on the model, the comfort features, and whether you use insurance or FSA/HSA funds. Every APAP machine here is FSA/HSA eligible. See each product page for current pricing, and ask your provider about coverage.

Can an APAP machine be used as a regular CPAP?

Many auto machines can also run in a fixed CPAP mode, so your clinician can set either mode for you. Only your clinician should change the mode or your pressure.

Is APAP the same as auto CPAP or self-adjusting CPAP?

Yes. APAP, auto CPAP, auto-adjusting CPAP, and self-adjusting CPAP all describe the same type of machine that adjusts pressure automatically within a set range.
