Auto Adjusting CPAP Machines

An auto-adjusting CPAP machine, or APAP, automatically raises and lowers your air pressure breath by breath instead of holding one fixed setting. Also called an auto CPAP machine or an APAP machine, it keeps you at the lowest pressure you need at each moment of the night. How an APAP machine works

An APAP machine uses sensors to read your breathing and auto-titrates the pressure: it eases off when your airway is stable and adds pressure when it detects snoring, airflow limitation, or an apnea. Most auto CPAP machines run within a 4 to 20 cm H2O range, and your clinician sets the minimum and maximum that are right for you. Is an auto CPAP machine right for you?

Auto CPAP is often considered for people whose pressure needs change through the night, such as positional sleepers, people whose needs shift with sleep stage or weight, and those who found a single high fixed pressure hard to exhale against. It is not right for everyone: providers may not recommend APAP for conditions such as central sleep apnea or certain respiratory issues, so your doctor confirms it fits your diagnosis. Comfort features to look for

• Ramp: starts therapy at a lower pressure and rises gradually to your set pressure as you fall asleep.
• EPR (expiratory pressure relief): eases the pressure as you breathe out so exhaling feels more natural.
• Heated humidification: adds moisture to reduce a dry nose or throat. The AirSense 11 and AirSense 10 use built-in HumidAir; the AirMini uses a waterless HumidX.
• Data tracking: many machines record your usage and your AHI and can connect to an app like myAir, so you and your clinician can review your therapy.
