What Is an At-Home Sleep Apnea Test?

An at-home sleep apnea test is an FDA-cleared device you wear overnight in your own bed to screen for obstructive sleep apnea. A licensed sleep specialist reviews your results, and if sleep apnea is found, you receive a valid prescription you can use to start treatment. There is no lab stay and no night away from home, and all three tests below are FSA/HSA eligible.

We carry three FDA-cleared options, so you can match the test to how you want to do it:

  • WatchPAT One (Zoll Itamar): a wrist-worn, one-night test you do not return. It uses peripheral arterial tonometry (PAT) and is clinically validated with 89% agreement to an in-lab study.
  • NightOwl (ResMed): a small finger sensor that records up to 10 nights to capture night-to-night variation, with nothing to return.
  • Wesper: a patch plus pulse oximeter Level 3 test for a more detailed look at airflow and oxygen across multiple nights (you return the device after use). Validated with 95% agreement to an in-lab study.

Not sure which one fits you? Compare them side by side in our WatchPAT vs. NightOwl vs. Wesper guide. Home tests screen for obstructive sleep apnea; if your case is more complex, your clinician may recommend an in-lab sleep study instead. Once you have a diagnosis and prescription, you are ready to choose a CPAP machine.

FAQs

How does an at-home sleep apnea test work?

It takes three steps. You order online with no clinic visit, you wear the device while you sleep at home for one or more nights, and a board-certified or licensed sleep specialist reviews your recording. You then receive a medical report, and if obstructive sleep apnea is diagnosed, a valid prescription is included so you can start treatment.

How much does an at-home sleep apnea test cost, and is it covered?

An at-home test costs far less than an in-lab sleep study. All three of our tests (NightOwl, WatchPAT One, and Wesper) are FSA/HSA eligible, so you can pay with pre-tax funds. Insurance coverage varies by plan and by test, so check your plan documents before you order and keep your receipt.

What does an at-home sleep apnea test measure?

It depends on the device. The NightOwl uses peripheral arterial tonometry (PAT) along with movement, pulse rate, and blood oxygen. The WatchPAT One uses PAT to derive your breathing events (AHI), plus oxygen, heart rate, snoring, body position, and sleep stages. The Wesper measures airflow, respiratory effort, oxygen, and heart rate, with sleep staging and body position.

What do my results mean, and what is AHI?

Your report centers on the AHI, or apnea-hypopnea index, which is the average number of times per hour your breathing pauses or becomes shallow during sleep. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine classifies 5 to 15 as mild, 15 to 30 as moderate, and over 30 as severe obstructive sleep apnea. If you are diagnosed, your prescription lets you move on to treatment such as CPAP therapy.

Do I need a doctor referral or prescription to order?

No referral is needed to order. You complete the test at home, and a board-certified or licensed sleep specialist reviews it. If sleep apnea is diagnosed, a valid prescription is included in your report, which you can use to purchase CPAP equipment.

Are at-home sleep tests FSA or HSA eligible?

Yes. The NightOwl, WatchPAT One, and Wesper are all FSA/HSA eligible, so you can use pre-tax funds at checkout. Plan rules vary, so keep your itemized receipt and check your account for any submission requirements.

How accurate is an at-home test compared to an in-lab study?

For screening uncomplicated obstructive sleep apnea, at-home tests are clinically validated and convenient. According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, they are appropriate for adults with a high likelihood of moderate-to-severe sleep apnea and no significant other conditions. They focus on breathing, oxygen, and heart rate, and do not measure brain-wave sleep staging the way an in-lab polysomnography does.

Which test is right for me, and who needs an in-lab study?

If you want the simplest one-night option, the WatchPAT One needs no return. If you want multiple nights of data, the NightOwl records up to 10 nights, and the Wesper adds airflow detail as a Level 3 test. Home tests are best for screening straightforward obstructive sleep apnea. If you have central sleep apnea, significant heart or lung conditions, or a suspected movement disorder, your clinician may recommend an in-lab study.

Do I have to return the device after the test?

It depends on the test. The WatchPAT One and the NightOwl are not returned. The Wesper device is returned after your test using the prepaid shipping label in your kit. Each kit includes step-by-step instructions.
