5 Signs Your Snoring Isn't Just Snoring

Snoring might seem harmless (maybe just a little frustrating), but for millions of people, it’s actually a sign of sleep apnea. Here are 5 signs to look out for.

SIGN
1

Your partner has heard you stop breathing.

This is the one most people miss, because you can't notice it yourself. Brief silences in the middle of the night, followed by a gasp, a snort, or a choke, aren't a quirk of how you sleep. They're called apneas: short stretches when your airway collapses and breathing pauses.

People with obstructive sleep apnea can have a handful of these per night, or a few hundred. Either way, it's the highest-signal sign on this list.

"He'd go quiet for what felt like forever, then jolt awake gasping. I started counting the seconds. That's when I knew." - Sara H.

SIGN
2

You snore loud enough to be heard through a wall.

Loud, chronic snoring is a result of your airway narrowing and tissue vibrating against tissue. The narrower it gets, the closer you are to the breathing pauses. Roughly half of people who snore loudly every night have at least mild sleep apnea. It doesn't mean you do. It means it's worth a look.

SIGN
3

You wake up tired, even after a full eight hours.

Time in bed isn't the same as time asleep. If your body is fighting to breathe all night, you're cycling out of deep sleep dozens of times an hour without ever fully waking up. You log eight hours and feel like you slept four. This isn't lazy. It isn't out of shape. It's sleep that isn't actually rest...and coffee can't fix it.

SIGN
4

Your focus, mood, or drive isn't what it used to be.

Brain fog. Short fuse. Workouts that used to feel routine now feel like a slog. Long meetings you can't quite lock into. A sex drive quieter than you remember. These get blamed on age, stress, or screen time but chronic sleep fragmentation is one of the most common causes, and one of the most missed.

SIGN
5

You wake up with a dry mouth, sore throat, or morning headache.

A dry mouth means you've been mouth-breathing all night — a sign your airway isn't moving air the way it should. Morning headaches can come from the small drops in oxygen that happen during apnea events. Individually, none of these are alarming. Together with the signs above, they start to tell a story.
