Once you’ve completed the test, a board-certified sleep specialist will carefully review your results and provide a detailed report on your sleep patterns and breathing disturbances. If sleep apnea is detected, the doctor can issue a prescription for a CPAP machine or recommend other treatment options tailored to your needs. With its lightweight design, user-friendly setup, and clinical accuracy, the Night Owl Home Sleep Test makes diagnosing sleep apnea easier and more accessible than ever.
The Night Owl collects detailed data to calculate the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), which measures how many times per hour breathing is partially or completely blocked during sleep. AHI is critical for diagnosing the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and determining the right treatment.
Once data is collected, it’s sent directly to a licensed physician who reviews the sleep apnea indicators, including AHI, oxygen desaturation, and PAT data, to confirm or rule out an OSA diagnosis and recommend appropriate next steps.
Night Owl is FDA-cleared to monitor sleep apnea indicators, allowing for home-based evaluation without needing to visit a sleep lab. It’s designed for people 13 and older with a prescription, offering clinical-level data collection while sleeping in a natural environment.
The device uses a fingertip sensor that weighs less than an ounce and doesn’t require wristbands or chest belts. It stays securely in place using a comfortable adhesive strap, reducing the risk of sleep disruption and making it easier to complete multi-night testing.
Night Owl allows for testing over multiple nights to account for variations in sleep patterns. By collecting data across several nights, it helps prevent false negatives that can occur with single-night tests and provides a more accurate representation of apnea severity.
An integrated accelerometer monitors actigraphy (body movements) throughout the night to help identify sleep and wake periods. This provides essential context for interpreting oxygen desaturation events and determining accurate Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI) scores.
Night Owl uses PPG technology to continuously measure blood oxygen saturation. Drops in oxygen levels are a key indicator of apnea events, making this measurement essential for accurate diagnosis.
The device measures changes in peripheral arterial tone to detect autonomic nervous system responses to apnea events, such as variations in heart rate and blood pressure. This allows Night Owl to identify apneas even in the absence of major body movements or obvious desaturation events.
The collected data is analyzed to generate the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI), representing the number of apnea and hypopnea events per hour of sleep. This measurement is central for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea and assessing its severity.
All device operation is managed through the NightOwl Companion app, available for iOS and Android. The app is used to initiate recordings, monitor device status, and automatically transmit test data to a physician for review.
Once testing is completed, results are uploaded securely through the app and made available for physicians to review. This ensures that diagnosis and treatment recommendations are based on medically reviewed data.
Setup involves attaching the sensor to the fingertip, pairing with the app, and starting the recording. No additional wires or complicated calibration are needed, and setup is typically completed within minutes.
Prior to the test, users complete a health questionnaire in the app, covering key areas like snoring patterns, daytime sleepiness, and other symptoms. This information helps physicians interpret test results in context.
Unlike traditional polysomnography, Night Owl uses a single contact point and does not require users to wear headbands, belts, or microphones. This reduces the risk of altering natural sleep patterns, which can affect test accuracy.
After submitting the test data, users receive a formal review and interpretation from a licensed physician, including a diagnosis if appropriate. Based on these results, doctors can prescribe therapy or recommend further evaluation.
For many patients, Night Owl provides sufficient diagnostic information to avoid costly and inconvenient in-lab sleep studies, streamlining access to diagnosis and treatment.
Each morning after testing, the app prompts users to report subjective sleep quality, which can be reviewed alongside objective data to guide clinical interpretation and treatment planning.
Night Owl stores historical data within the app, allowing patients and providers to review previous nights’ results and assess therapy response over time if needed.
Using photoplethysmography (PPG), Night Owl tracks blood oxygen levels throughout the night. Drops in oxygen saturation indicate apnea or hypopnea events, helping clinicians assess how sleep apnea affects oxygen delivery to the body.
The device measures changes in arterial tone, which are signals from the autonomic nervous system that reflect respiratory effort and apneic events. PAT analysis adds an important layer of sensitivity, detecting events that might not cause large oxygen drops but still disrupt sleep.
Night Owl monitors body movement to determine when you’re asleep or awake. This is essential for accurate sleep apnea assessment because it ensures events are only counted when the user is actually sleeping, avoiding false readings.
Since OSA can fluctuate, the option to gather data over several nights helps reveal patterns that a single-night test might miss. This is especially useful in borderline cases where severity may vary, allowing for a more thorough analysis.
By using only a fingertip sensor, Night Owl avoids bulky equipment that can interfere with normal sleep, helping to ensure that the apnea-related data reflects typical sleep patterns, which is essential for accurate diagnosis.
